CAPE TOWN, South Africa – Western Cape community safety provincial minister Albert Fritz said today, “I can now confirm that a 26-year-old male was arrested in Khayelitsha in the early hours of this morning, thanks largely to cooperation from the community.”
The man was arrested in connection with the murder of newlywed Anni Dewani, wife of millionaire Shrien Dewani. The newlyweds were traveling via taxi in the Gugulethu area, when they were carjacked by two men with guns. Shrien was forced out of the car and flagged down a vehicle to take him to the police. Anni was found dead the following morning in the hijacked car with 3 bullet wounds to her chest.
“The investigation continues, and I urge police to collect and use all available evidence so that we ultimately secure a conviction. The speedy turnaround time in which this matter was investigated is truly commendable, and I would like to see this sort of energy and urgency put to use in every investigation, regardless of the profile of the victim,” Fritz added.
The investigation is continuing and it was not clear when the man would appear in court or what his exact connection to the murder is. Nothing has been mentioned about what happened to the taxi driver.
